Top Netflix South African Shows and Movies Coming Soon in 2024
Netflix offered an exclusive preview of its upcoming films and series from South Africa at MIP Africa, highlighting its growing investment in local content. Ben Amadasun, Netflix’s vice president of content for the Middle East and Africa, introduced these additions, emphasizing the platform’s commitment to delivering authentic South African stories in various formats and genres.
The slate includes a South African adaptation of the global reality show Love Never Lies, a continuation of the Happiness movie series, a four-part anthology titled Umjolo, and a new holiday film called Disaster Holiday.
“We are thrilled to keep building our partnerships with South African creators and to bring unique and diverse local stories to audiences both locally and worldwide,” said Amadasun. “South African narratives have resonated not only within the country but also abroad. These new titles are just a glimpse of what’s in store as we continue to share these stories with our 278 million subscribers globally.”

Love Never Lies: South Africa
The South African version of the international reality show Love Never Lies, produced by Rapid Blue, features six couples testing their trust with a lie-detecting eye scanner. “In this show, lying costs money, and truth is rewarded,” says the description. Episodes of Love Never Lies: South Africa will be available from November 29.
Happiness Is
Following the films Happiness Is a 4 Letter Word and Happiness Ever After, Netflix will release a new addition to the romantic comedy franchise on October 18. The movie continues the story of a group of friends confronting their personal and relational challenges. Produced by Blingola Media and led by a women-driven production team, the film has Lesedi Siswana as its producer, with Bongiwe Selane as the creative and executive producer.
Umjolo
Produced by Stained Glass TV, this four-part anthology series will release a new feature each month until February 2025. The first movie in the series, Umjolo: The Gone Girl, follows a young woman who appears to have the perfect partner, only to face an unexpected revelation after a doctor’s visit. The first installment premieres on November 8.
Disaster Holiday
The holiday season will feature Disaster Holiday, a comedy from Burnt Onion Productions, known for hits like How to Ruin Christmas and Seriously Single. Directed by Rethabile Ramaphakela, the film follows a career-focused father attempting to prove his dedication by taking his dysfunctional family on a chaotic holiday. Disaster Holiday will be available starting December 13.
